TUMAKURU: A 11-year-old girl, who had been sold off by her aunt for Rs 25,000 due to poverty, was rescued by the police and labour department officials, thanks to quick thinking by the mother.

Chowdamma, a resident of Dibbur in Tumakuru, had sent her 11-year-old daughter to her younger sister Sujatha’s house in Hindupur, Andhra Pradesh. Sujatha is a nursing mother. When Chowdamma went to Hindupur to fetch her daughter, she was shocked to learn that her daughter was not at her sister’s house.

It was then that Sujatha revealed that she had sold off the girl to one Sriramulu for Rs 25,000. Sriramulu had employed the girl to rear ducks on his farm. Chowdamma then approached the man to release her daughter, but he refused to do so unless his money was paid back.

Chowdamma rushed back to Tumakuru and informed the labour department officials who, in turn, passed on the information to the police.

A police team then rescued the girl who is now lodged in the Bala Mandir. The Tumkur town police have registered a case.
