BENGALURU: After putting on hold further release of funds to all departments for works approved by the previous BJP government, the fate of 11 proposed flyovers in the city now seems uncertain.
Given the increasing traffic in the city, it was proposed to build 11 flyovers in different parts of the city to ease traffic flow and the previous government had even approved the proposals. These include the controversial Sankey Tank flyover, Minerva Circle flyover, Ittamadu junction, Sarakki, Forum Mall and St John’s hospital. But now, it is unlikely that the projects may take off any time soon.
Concerned citizens and environmentalists had raised objection to the Sankey Tank flyover and even staged a protest. Following this, the police had booked cases against the protesters.
Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) chief commissioner Tushar Giri Nath said, “We are not taking up any projects where work has not started. In some cases, though the tender process has been completed and where letter of intent (LoI) and work order have not been issued, we have put them on hold. As far as the sanctioned projects like the flyovers, detailed project reports (DPRs) have to be prepared and scrutinised by a committee headed by a retired judge. We can proceed only after we get approval from the new government”.
Giri Nath said though tenders were floated for the flyovers, no LoIs have been issued. The proposals regarding the flyovers will be placed before the government which will take a call.
